The introduction of letters of the alphabet and limitation wood-graining into the picture, together with papiers collés and even sand, was due in the first instance to Braque, who had been trained as a craftsman. Gris took over some of these procedures, on which he left the indelible mark of his own personal style - a style whose noble harmonies serenely dominated the intriguing charm of his execution.
