$3,250

Date: 1942 Size: 33.5 x 49.75 inches Artist: Bernard Villemot About The Poster: The 1942 "Brevet Sportif National" (BSN) poster by French graphic designer Bernard Villemot is a rare, iconic lithograph. Commissioned by the Vichy-era Commissariat Général à l'Education Générale et aux Sports, it mandated that athletes under 20 pass the national sports test to compete. About The Artist: Bernard Villemot (1911–1989), highly celebrated for his clean, minimalist style and commercial designs. To many, Bernard Villemot (and his friend and fellow creator Raymond Savignac) represents the end of the age of the trained artist as poster designer. His work has become iconic in its innovative design and use of color. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Bernard Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively, “was to treat a poster as though it were a painting”.
