Here’s an opportunity to own what could possibly be a unique artwork by one of America’s most important and accomplished artist/sculptors of the 20th Century, Waylande Gregory. Born in Kansas in 1905, Gregory moved slowly eastward and worked around, including stints in Chicago (Lorado Taft’s Midway Studios), Ohio (Cowan pottery), and Michigan (Cranbrook Academy of Art), settling on the East Coast. He occasionally worked with design luminaries such as Walter Dorwin Teague. This particular work, “Dancing Figures (with spears),” was accomplished with spray paint and oil crayon on paper. As to when or why, who knows?! It’s a large work, measuring about 35 by 35 inches, on extremely thin, fragile paper. Spontaneously created for…? The work demonstrates Gregory’s artistic prowess insofar as working with unusual, simple materials and creating a work which “lives” via its energy. It will be shipped in a mailing tube after having been rolled in a more substantial paper for support and protection. The wooden frame and its plastic artwork protector will be shipped independently. The painted white wooden frame measures about 40x40 inches and measures about 1". There are some small holes in the paper (which appear black in the photos, showing the black mat board underneath). There is some slight damage to the area around the signature, as the piece was glued to the mat board there. Some acid-free tape will be employed on the back to fortify that area. Ideally, the piece will be linen-backed for protection and ease of display in the future.
