A finely rendered vintage marine oil painting after Willem van de Velde the Younger (Dutch, 1633–1707), depicting the royal yacht Cleveland — one of King Charles II's own pleasure yachts — heeling through a fresh breeze under the red ensign, with warships on the horizon. The original composition dates to July 1673, painted just as the Van de Veldes entered the service of Charles II at Greenwich, where father and son transformed marine painting in Britain and inspired generations of artists, J.M.W. Turner among them. Van de Velde the Younger remains the benchmark of marine painting — ships rendered with near-documentary accuracy, seas alive with weather and light.
