Stylized hand study, pencil on paper by Detroit artist, John Cobel (1928-2018). Signed and dated 1974. One of three children to John H. and Lillian Coble. He spent most of his childhood in Oklahoma and Detroit, and at the age of sixteen, John went aboard a ship in New York and served his country as a Merchant Marine, transporting supplies and equipment to troops during World War II. John’s love of helping others and his gregarious nature suited him well for his career as a cab driver in Southfield and Detroit areas. He owned his own taxicab and was proud of it. Many of his subjects are of his passengers that he encountered on his Route. John was an artist in both painting and sculpture.
