He never took an art class until his senior year in high school but an army test proved he had ability and aptitude to continue with this interest of his. After a two year commercial art course, John took jobs -first as a billboard painter and later in the design department of Mobil Corporation. After a stint as a staff artist at the Illinois State Museum, John and his family moved west, lured by photographs out of Arizona Highways Magazine. John worked as a commercial artist in Denver before moving to the Southwest in 1979 to pursue painting and lithography full time. Axton draws his images from the area he loves the buffalo, a precise adobe Pueblo and the mountains rising over the endless desert. He described himself as a minimalist, working simply to create images that allow the viewer to be drawn in by his stark visions and unique perspectives.
