Powerful Abstract By J. L. Mitchell Gouache in Large Custom Frame New York, NY What little Provence I have is as follows: Originally, this piece graced the wall of an important office at SELF Magazine in New York, NY in the 1980-90s. When the occupant of that office left, this excellent abstract was offered to an individual who had recently been hired. He has kept it throughout his travels and brought it with him a few years ago when he moved to Kansas to teach at KU. Horizontally the frame measures 42 inches Vertically: 31 inches Width: 1 3/4 inches A very handsome piece with what appears to be hidden writing., both horizontal and vertical, tucked away on this work here and there. Ready to hang.but the transfers of gouache to front glass may be problematic. Condition: Please, have a look at photo #1. You can just make out how measuring in about 2 1/2 inches from the edge, the upper right-hand, and left top section of the art work has slightly expanded away from the back while the corners remain firmly in place. This is not atypical for artwork of this age. Condition: Also, especially seen with a side glancing light, it some of the material (pastel or gouache) with which it was created has transferred to the inside of the glass. Depending on your relationship with how this appears, you may want to have the glass cleaned. I haven't found it visually distracting and also haven't had much luck photographing them as a whole but have taken some close up pics (6-9) so you can see an example of the spots. Please note: there is no water damage on the frame or the drawing. The close up picture of a corner of the frame shows a natural coloration of the wood itself and not water damage.
