Michael P. Smith (1937-2008) was a celebrated American photographer, primarily known for his extensive documentary work capturing the rich cultural, musical, and spiritual life of New Orleans. His archive is now housed at The Historic New Orleans Collection. The photograph depicts Thomas A. Dorsey, widely recognized as the "Father of Gospel Music," kneeling in front of the tombstone of gospel legend Mahalia Jackson.
