Michael P. Smith (1937-2008) was a celebrated American photographer, primarily known for his extensive documentary work capturing the rich cultural, musical, and spiritual life of New Orleans. His archive is now housed at The Historic New Orleans Collection. The photograph depicts Thomas A. Dorsey, widely recognized as the "Father of Gospel Music," kneeling in front of the tombstone of gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. The tombstone in the image clearly shows "JACKS" Mahalia Jackson was a highly influential gospel singer, and Thomas A. Dorsey was instrumental in developing and popularizing gospel music in the United States. This photograph captures a moment of solemn respect and connection between two giants of gospel music.
