This beautifully executed oil on canvas captures Fra Angelico painting in the San Marco monastery. "Fra" is used as a title equivalent to brother preceding the name of an Italian monk or friar. Fra Angelico helped transform the art world and usher in the High Renaissance. He invented emotional interiority in art & is one of the most sublime painters of the Renaissance. The other monks go about their daily activities in this impactful and detailed painting by Otto Knille. Otto Knille is a listed German artist (1832 - 1898). He trained at the Academy of Düsseldorf under Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm Schadow from 1848 onwards. Under the sponsorship of King George V he became a portrait painter for the German nobility. Living in Paris, Munich & Italy he became established as a history painter. He even worked on a series of wall paintings for Queen Marie's castle. The original frame adds an elegant finish. This antique painting has been previously owned and loved, and will show some level of wear consistent with this prior use. Overall craquelure accurately conveys the sense of another time. There is wear to the frame, especially around the edges and corners that has happened over time. The patina on the frame has different grades of coloration and there is some separation in the corners of the frame, as shown in the photos.
