LARGE Spanish Colonial Oil Painting circa 1850’s, unsigned, Mexico Sacred Heart of Mary and Souls in Purgatory. Finely detailed oil painting on canvas. Religious themed painting depicts the separation of the saved and the damned in several distinct areas: Heaven - top portion: Christ and God the Father enthroned in the clouds, surrounded by the angels. The Holy Spirit depicted by the dove and Virgin Mary dramatically illuminated in light colors. Purgatory - Mid Section: an angel guiding souls who are reaching upwards seeking salvation toward heaven. Hell - Bottom: Souls engulfed in flames showing despair and torment painted in dark deep red and black shades. Excellent example of Spanish Colonial art. Canvas stretched and nailed on wooded frame.
