Artist Vico Vigano (1874-1967)is a native of Milan, who often painted landscapes of his homeland, but received his greatest recognition as an engraver. His paintings are characterized by strong colors rendered with broad textural brush strokes. This portrait of a young officer is a perfect example. Vigano disregards the formality of symmetry and fine, realistic brushstrokes normally used in portraits of this time for a heavier touch with both paint and brush to create an intriguing contrast of subject and style.
