Based on the 1920 monoprint, the original work utilized an oil transfer method of Klee's own design. The image was popularized by its first owner, German philosopher Walter Benjamin, who incorporated the work into his writing. This led to the image being adopted as an icon among the left of the European political groups. The image has also been an avowed inspiration for many artists, musicians and writers.
