Her artist statement: Laura Gee is a visual artist working and living in London. Through mark making, colour and painterly gestures, Laura creates works which explore nature, a sense of place and time, emotions, motherhood and mental health. Laura’s art is emotive, exploring feelings of anxiety, peace, love, grief, certainty and uncertainty , hope and joy. Laura’s mission is to enable others to create art through simple accessible ways, to improve their wellbeing and mental health. Her work has been exhibited at The Garden Museum, Bankside Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery to name a few. Laura’s playful and colourful artwork has been publicly and privately commissioned, and are in private collections around the world. Her work has been commissioned by Imperial Health Charity, resulting in an installation of 15 pieces of work for a new mental health unit at St Mary’s Hospital, London in 2023. In 2024, Laura was commissioned by UCLH Arts and Heritage Charity to create paintings for the outpatient department at UCLH. Her work is throughout 7 clinics and reception at the outpatients department, to positively impact the service users and staff. Laura creates art that is emotive, exploring feelings of anxiety, peace, love, grief, certainty and uncertainty , hope and joy. Laura’s mission is to enable others to create art through simple accessible ways, to improve their wellbeing and mental health. Alongside Laura’s practise, she has developed and led her nature inspired art workshops for The Garden Museum, Hackney Arts Charity, Hospital Rooms and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Laura has created and led nature inspired art workshops in primary schools, for ages 3-11. Laura is currently developing a series of accessible art workshops for mothers to help explore emotions throughout motherhood, and improve their wellbeing and mental health, after she herself experienced maternal mental health issues. Alongside support from the NHS, she also found that the simple, meditative use of mark making helped and is now working on delivering workshops in the borough of Waltham Forest. “My work is influenced by the idea of pausing to be present in moments of nature and finding joy in everyday life. Living in London, I have sought time with nature more and more and have cherished even small moments. This notion of being present translates itself in the studio as I get into a state of flow and become totally present in creating painterly marks and colour-filled pieces."
