20th Century Black And White Photograph Of Ortaköy Mosque In Istanbul Turkey

Chairish

$185

This original signed and framed black-and-white photograph captures the Ortaköy Mosque on the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey. This Mosque was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid and originally called the Büyük Mecidiye Camii. It is a famous example of Ottoman Baroque architecture, which was completed in 1853. The original fluted minarets were replaced after an earthquake in 1894, which dates this photo to sometime after that event. We know it was taken before 1970, when the Bosphorus Bridge was built, and would have been visible in the background after 1970. The image quality, framing, and note on the back suggest it is from the mid-20th century. A faint yellow signature in the lower right corner of the photo might be 'Vogel' as a note on the back suggests. Preserved behind glass and a cream-colored mat, with a thin black-painted wood frame and hanging wire intact. Some dark areas in the photos are reflections in the glass and not present in the image itself.
