A set of four framed, colored engravings from the "triumphal procession of maximilian i." the standard-bearers are depicted in their finest attire, adorned in sumptuous costumes and ornate headdresses, mounted on caparisoned horses. maximilian i of habsburg (1459–1519) was holy roman emperor from 1508. Nicknamed the "last knight" for his adherence to medieval values, he was a great warrior, a skilled diplomat, and an enlightened patron of the arts. He considerably expanded habsburg power through military might, but especially through strategic marriages. he died in 1519, leaving an empire that, under his grandson charles v, would become the largest in europe. this series presents the mounted standard-bearers of the territories the emperor was to inherit: *plate 62, banners with the coats of arms of säckingen, hohenberg, and nellenburg *plate 60, banners with the coats of arms of kyburg, ferrette, and gorizia *plate 63, banners with the coats of arms of glarus, the county of sonnenberg, and the county of feldkirch *plate 73, banners with the arms of duino, oberwaldsee, and unterwaldsee the triumphal procession of emperor maximilian i consists of 38 undated and unsigned woodcuts. The plan for this procession was drawn up by johannes stabius based on a design by jörg kölderer. the instructions given by maximilian i were recorded by his secretary, marx treitzsaurwein, in a manuscript now kept in vienna. The work involved the greatest artists of the time: hans burgkmair the elder, albrecht dürer, albrecht altdorfer, hans springinklee, and other masters of german engraving. the louvre museum has several 16th-century engravings in its collections. good condition, some stains and wear not examined outside the frame dimensions with frame: 53 x 62 x 1.5 cm
