I bought this painting in the late 70s directly from San Francisco artist Sean Roriarty. Its iconography is powerfully about two-spirit men. They sport vigorous antlers and their skin carries what look like Lakota black eagles – traditional symbols of strength. Sean told me that he had painted this picture while encamped for the summer at Vogelsang Camp south of Tuolumne Meadows in the High Sierra. He was a good friend, so I knew that it was in his nature to do that. But can you imagine the logistics?! (That camp is now closed.) He didn't sign the painting – why I don't know – but it's been in my home for, lo, these 45 years, so I'm sure of its provenance.
