A Late 19th-Century Poetic Interpretation Of Nature, By Anna Hook

Chairish

$950

On offer is an antique oil landscape painting signed in the upper right corner by Anna Hook. This work beautifully draws upon the Tonalist or Barbizon school traditions. Both emphasized soft, atmospheric light, muted earth tones and a moody, poetic interpretation of nature. The piece depicts a dramatic twilight or oncoming storm scene. A large cluster of trees featuring warm, reddish-brown autumn foliage dominates the right side of the canvas. In the center foreground, a lone animal grazes in an open pasture. In the distant background, a low-lying silhouette of a small village sits on the horizon line beneath a heavily clouded, turbulent sky. The ornate, Louis XIV gilded frame, featuring intricate floral scrollwork is highly typical of late 19th and early 20th-century gallery presentations. Fine cracking across the paint surface and heavy varnish yellowing or darkening is an organic aging process typical of oil paintings that are 100+ years old. Signature/Maker’s mark: Upper right-hand corner (photo #7). Unframed dimensions: 10.5” high x 16” wide.
