After Walpole’s death, the collection was famously sold to Catherine the Great of Russia in 1779; Boydell’s engravings were intended to preserve and circulate images of these masterworks in Britain and beyond. Carlo Cignani, the original painter, was a leading Bolognese artist of the late Baroque, known for his idealized mythological scenes filled with graceful figures and rich color harmonies.
