Biblical History Engravings – Joseph and Moses, Dutch Bible Series c.1700 This remarkable set of six original antique copper engravings forms part of a larger biblical narrative series published in Amsterdam around 1700. Each sheet contains two finely engraved scenes illustrating key episodes from the lives of Joseph and Moses from the Old Testament, creating a rich visual chronicle of some of the Bible's most enduring stories. The engravings are after designs by Gerard Hoet and belong to the celebrated Dutch Baroque tradition of biblical illustration. The compositions combine dramatic storytelling with elegant classical architecture, expansive landscapes, and finely observed figures. The engravers employed delicate line work and subtle shading to create depth, movement, and emotion throughout the scenes. The Joseph series includes episodes such as Joseph's brothers accused of theft, Joseph revealing himself to his brothers, Joseph presented before Pharaoh, Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, and Joseph's rise to power in Egypt. These scenes capture the themes of betrayal, forgiveness, wisdom, and divine providence that define the Joseph narrative. The Moses engravings depict pivotal moments from the Exodus story, including Moses defeating the Amalekites, the construction of an altar, the destruction of Pharaoh's forces in the Red Sea, and the miraculous gift of manna from heaven. These dramatic scenes illustrate liberation, faith, and God's guidance of the Israelites through the wilderness. Together the six sheets present twelve individual biblical scenes, making the set particularly suitable for collectors of religious art, biblical iconography, Dutch Golden Age prints, and early illustrated books. The engravings display the refinement and clarity for which Amsterdam publishers of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries became famous. These are original antique engravings, not reproductions. The prints are offered unframed. Any framed images shown are for display inspiration only and may not represent exact scale. Condition: Good antique condition overall. Age-related toning and occasional foxing. Minor edge wear, small creases, and light handling marks consistent with age. Some sheets show slight irregularities to the margins and corners. Please review photographs carefully. Framing tips: These engravings work beautifully as a gallery wall displayed in two rows of three. Consider dark walnut, ebonized, or gilded frames with ivory museum mats to emphasize the fine engraved detail while complementing the warm tone of the antique paper.
