On offer is a mid-century abstract landscape painting by the prominent Northern California modernist painter Alexander Nepote (1913–1986). The piece showcases Nepote’s signature fascination with the geologic textures of California, balancing organic abstraction with raw elements of nature. Alexander Nepote was a founding member of an art group known as "The Layerists." He specialized in a complex, multi-layered approach to painting rather than using a single traditional medium. To create the unique, stone-like depth seen in this specific work, the artist started with thick, textured paper capable of absorbing heavy pooling water, scraping, and scrubbing without tearing. He then utilized watercolor and gouache to make the translucent washes of emerald green and turquoise blend into dense, opaque earth tones. He often relied on a "wet-on-wet" watercolor technique to form unpredictable, bleeding patterns that mimic natural rock aging and water flow. A close look at the cracked "boulder" sections reveals subtle structural layering. Nepote routinely mixed media, incorporating scraped pigments or fine collage materials to build actual tactile depth into the composition. Lastly, the deep, sharp fissures running through the canyon floor and rocky outcrops were detailed using fine ink or non-water-soluble pigment lines to anchor the fluid washes. Born on a ranch near Stockton, California, Nepote became an influential figure in the California Regionalist watercolor movement. While his early 1930s work featured impressionistic farm and coastal landscapes, his style evolved dramatically after WWII into bold, geologic abstraction. By the late 1950s and 1960s, Nepote became deeply absorbed by rock formations, desert mesas, and cascading water. This painting perfectly embodies that era, stripping away the literal sky and horizon to drop the viewer directly into a micro-view of a canyon floor or mossy creek bed. Today his artworks are highly sought after by mid-century modern collectors and are part of major museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
