After Rembrandt, Landscape With A Canal, Pen Drawing, 19th Century

Chairish

$976

A graphic sheet depicting a rural landscape, executed in pen and ink. The composition unfolds along a winding canal receding into the depth of the scene. On the left bank stand farm buildings and a cart, behind which rises a group of trees forming a dense silhouette along the horizon. At the centre of the composition a small bridge crosses the canal, with a figure walking across it. The right bank forms a gentle hill along which a cart with horses is moving. The drawing is executed with a free and energetic line conveying the rhythm of the shoreline, the silhouettes of trees and the character of the rural landscape. The manner of execution recalls the traditions of Dutch landscape drawing of the 17th century and echoes the landscape sketches of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 - 1669), which were often made during his walks in the surroundings of Amsterdam. The sheet is presented in a decorative green mat and set within a carved frame. Dimensions: Drawing size: 14.5 × 24 cm. Frame size: height 30 cm, width 40 cm. Condition: Good. The paper shows light natural toning and minor traces of age. Provenance: Private European collection.
