Alessandro Reati, View Of Venice, 1800s, Oil On Panel, Framed

Chairish

$1,087

Oil on panel, realized around 1860s. Signed lower right "Reati". A charming and atmospheric Venetian view by Italian painter Alessandro Reati, known for his lively depictions of the lagoon city and its characteristic interplay of architecture, water, and light. This finely executed oil painting captures a tranquil canal at sunset, with gondolas gliding through shimmering reflections and figures strolling along the fondamenta. Reati’s brushwork—vigorous yet controlled—creates a delicate balance between architectural solidity and the fluidity of the water’s surface. The composition is framed by imposing historic buildings to the right, rendered in warm ochre and sienna, and more intimate Venetian dwellings to the left. A brick bridge draws the eye toward the distant skyline, where the fading light casts a soft glow across the sky. The painting’s serene atmosphere and harmonious palette exemplify Reati’s affinity for the poetic side of Venetian urban life. Presented in an ornate, period-style carved and lacquered wooden frame that enhances the work’s decorative presence. The painting appears to be in good, stable condition with a well-preserved surface. Very light craquelure consistent with age visible particularly in sky passages. Frame with minor wear. Back of panel shows original wooden support and typical handling marks. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
