Amethyst crystals, a variety of quartz, (silicon dioxide). The purple colour in amethysts is caused by the presence of compounds of iron or manganese. It is often used as a gemstone in jewellery, especially in rings. Although amethyst is found in Europe and North America, the finest specimens occur in India, Sri Lanka and Brazil.
