André Gisson (American, 1921–2003) Signed Original Paris Street Scene with Figures and Carriage Oil on Canvas Canvas size is Approx 38 x 26... finished frame size is 43x31 André Gisson (American, 1921–2003) was an American Impressionist painter best known for shimmering Paris street scenes, beaches, and landscapes painted in a distinctly French style. Born Anders (or Andrew) Gittelson in Brooklyn, New York, he studied at the Pratt Institute before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he traveled widely in France, Italy, and Spain, eventually adopting the name “André Gisson” and presenting himself as a French painter, believing it would help his career in the Impressionist tradition. Working primarily in oil with light, broken brushwork and soft, atmospheric color, he painted figures, harbor views, and countryside scenes that echo late 19th-century French Impressionism. Gisson exhibited in galleries across the United States and Europe, and his paintings remain popular on the contemporary market for their romantic, nostalgic mood. He died in 2003 in Connecticut.
