"Animated Formation" Abstract Aquatint Etching Abstract Aquatint Etching by Katherine "Kay" Metz (b. 1932-2018.)This dynamic print by Kay Metz straddles the line between organic and geometric forms. The bottom third of the piece features a warmer toned shape covering most of the space and dividing the piece, creating the feeling of a ground or horizon line. This foreground is then crossed by varying blue and grey shapes and line work. The slight curves of these shapes combined with the linework create a circular sense of movement in the center of the piece. This combination of forms results in a piece which feels both grounded and animated. Kay Metz was born on September 3, 1932, in Dayton, Ohio. She studied at Bowling Green State University and received a BFA there, later she received an MA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Following her MA, she studied print working at Atelier 17 in Paris and later moved to New York where she worked with Philip Guston and Robert Blackburn, whilst also teaching at NYU. In 1971 she was hired by the University of California, Santa Cruz to teach in and found their print making department. She retired from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1992 but continued to be involved in the community; plein air painting at local landmarks and working on the board of the Watsonville Wetlands Watch. Her work spans a variety of subjects from abstract prints to landscape paintings and drawings.
