A pair of original fine antique prints pressed from entirely hand engraved copper plates on paper made of linen fiber pulp. Right: titled 'Lotte' is a scene from 'The Sorrows of Young Werther', a love story novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) and is a richly detailed depiction of Werther opening the front door to take Lotte out to a ball, but finds her surrounded by chaos of her young siblings left in her care after the loss of their mother. Illustration by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874), engraved by J. L. Raab, published by verlag von Friedrich Bruckmann in Stuttgart, printed by Verlag von H. Felsing. The other, titled 'Dorothea' is based on an epic poem 'Hermann and Dorothea', also by Goethe, is the story of a wealthy man's son Hermann wishing to marry Dorothea, an impoverished refugee, as he struggles with his own family's opposition to their union.
