An antique 1881 Chromolithograph print of a Saint Bernard dog named “Abbess. "Abbess" was the property of Mr. Fred Gresham. This colorful dog chromolithograph is from "The Illustrated Book of the Dog" by Vero Shaw. The work was published by Cassell and Company of London in 1881. Shaw’s work was one of the earliest works to contain colored canine plates with very rich vibrant colors. Each subject was set in British, Scottish or Welsh landscapes or interiors. This book was an extensive treatise on dog breeds, kennels and kenneling, general management of dogs, exhibiting, buying and selling, and canine medicine and surgery. The beautifully executed dog prints from this volume are highly sought-after collectibles. Equally as exceptional is this handmade wooden frame. Parquet pattern with intricate trim.
