Antique Framed Oil Painting On Canvas By Leon Meechelaere (1880-1964)

Chairish

$2,980

Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Leon Meechelaere (1880-1964) is a splendid representation of the ancient city of Bruges, that at one time was the preeminent port for that part of Europe, eclipsed eventually by Antwerp and now Rotterdam. The wealth accumulated in the city brought forth a treasure trove of art and architecture, with the city's definitive canals intertwined into its street plan earning it the nickname of "Venice of the North". Here we see an early Spring season, with one of the many hand-laid stone bridges set upon a backdrop of handsome waterside homes, with green leaves budding out all over. Survives in its original frame. Leon Mechelaere was born in the fabled city of Bruges, and attended Academy of Fine Arts there, studying under Edouard Van Hove (1851 – 1913) and Franz Courtens (1850 – 1943). Mechelaere was also mentored by Juliaan De Vriendt (1842 – 1935). His specialty evolved into painting landscapes, interiors, portraits, still life and urban scenes, especially of his beloved home town which has inspired countless other artists as well. Mechelaere had a knack for capturing the charm, beauty and timelessness of his subjects. His works have appeared at the Groeninge Museum of Arts in Bruges. Circa early 1900s Measures 40H x 34W x 2D Available for pickup in the Dallas Design District, Dallas, Texas
