Arthur Luiz Piza - Petit Rouge - Etching - Late 20th-Century

Chairish

$1,279

Petit Rouge is an original etching on paper realized by Arthur Luiz Piza (1928-2017). Good Conditions. Hand-signed in pencil on the lower right margin. Image Dimensions: 9 x 9 / 27 x 21.5 cm Numbered 25 of 99 prints on the lower left margin. Arthur Luiz Piza was born in Sao Paulo, where he received his first training. He moved to Paris in 1955 and worked in the studio of the master of colour etching, Johnny Friedlaender. Piza soon became expert in all the techniques of etching and aquatint, using sugar-lft extensively, but he experimented in various ways to make his work more sculptural and three dimensional. He abandoned traditional etching techniques and, using very thick copper plates, he devised his unique ''gouge'' technique by incising his designs into his plates with hammers and various shaped chisels. His style is very personal: the plate is cut, gashed, gouged, hammered, sculpted in small, successive marks that, like scales, interlock and overlap; hollows become volumes. The artist works with the perception of matter, matter that is imaginary and poeticised. Arthur Luiz Piza lived and worked in Paris for most of his life. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
