Auguste Raffet, Bonjour. Mon Neveu, Lithograph, 1836

Chairish

$303

Lithograph realized by Raffet in 1838. Signed and dated on plate. Printed by Bertauts, Paris. A fine original lithograph by Auguste Raffet, one of the foremost French lithographers of the 19th century, celebrated for his wit and sharp social observation. The scene, titled Bonjour, mon neveu, presents a satirical tableau of Parisian bourgeois life: beneath the trees of a park, an elegant gentleman introduces his nephew to a fashionable acquaintance. In the background, a crowd of top-hatted figures strolls and converses, while children play in the foreground. The caption below enhances the humor: "Avec qui te promènes-tu là?\. c'est un de mes meilleurs amis. Un jeune homme charmant\. sans façon\. qui a plus de trente mille livres de rentes\. en perspective." (“with whom are you walking there?\. He is one of my best friends. A charming young man\. without affectation\. who has more than thirty thousand livres in rents\. in perspective.”) Raffet’s lithographs combine elegant draughtsmanship with social caricature, and this work is a fine example of his talent in depicting both the pomp and irony of Parisian society. Strong impression on wove paper. Light overall toning and foxing to the sheet, particularly in margins, but the image itself remains crisp and well-defined. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
