Finely painted in watercolour, this is likely a scaled down version of a work by one of the leading early 19th-century topographical artists, such as Samuel Prout (1783–1852), Clarkson Stanfield (1793–1867) or Richard Parkes Bonington (1802–1828). There is a very similar, although slightly different, composition in oil by Clarkson Stanfield.The town of Boppard in the Middle Rhine is dominated by the twin towers of St Severus Church.
