A bright and muted Fauvist-style portrait painting by Seattle-based artist Amy Scherer, of a young girl in a swimsuit posing with 'fish lips' with abstract ocean and beach imagery in the background. The repetition of stripes in three different colorways conjures a carnival boardwalk setting, as do the subject's rosy cheeks and sassy disposition. It was originally purchased at a Seattle charity auction in 1995, and we acquired it recently from the original owner. Acrylic paint on masonite with minimal black wooden built-in framework. Artist's signature reads, 'Scherer 95' in the bottom right corner. Amy Scherer studied with the accomplished 20th-century American painter William Cummings, often associated with the Northwest School. A review of her mentor's paintings reveals his influence on her foundation of color and composition. A second, smaller painting by the same artist in a similar palette and subject is also available, sold separately.
