A woodblock print by the Japanese artist Okiie Hashimoto (1899-1993). Titled "Castle Walls No. 5," this woodblock print depicts the wall around a Japanese castle with tall trees surrounding the wall. Marked with a chopmark to the lower left, the print is displayed in a wooden frame and a cream mat. Born in Yazu, Tottori Prefecture, Okiie Hashimoto started his career as a school teacher and then attended a training course for teachers at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated from in 1924. He continued his teaching career but in 1955, he started working as an artist full time. Okiie Hashimoto became a part of the postwar revival of the sōsaku-hanga movement in Japanese art and was particularly drawn to woodblock printing. While his prints depict a wide variety of subject matter, he became heavily focused on depicting Japanese castles and other Japanese architecture. Okiie Hashimoto's works are held in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harvard Art Museums, the Nihon no Hanga Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
