A lovely full color print after oil on canvas painting "Still Life - Ox's Skull" by Pablo Picasso. Comes from a rare art folio published by Crown Publishers, printed in Italy in circa 1969. Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a sheet of paper. Numbered: IX. Information on the back of paper is related to another piece in the folio. Excellent condition - never framed. Overall 9.5" W x 11.75" H Image 7.3" W x 9.9" H When the horrors of the Spanish Civil War were revived on an even greater scale with the start of the Second World War, no civilian was more profoundly shaken than Picasso, as a Spaniard, and as an artist. This was no time for "voluptuous death", but an apocalypse of bloody annihilation, which banished all hope of happiness or peaceful existence. Impelled to express in painting his horror at this cataclysm and tragedy, Picasso chose skeletons, skulls, etc. as symbols of his hatred and his anguish. His most tortured figures also date from this period.
