1 Painting Victorian c.1880 Gordon & Irish Red & White Setters — Signed By the artist Colin Graeme Roe, oil on Winsor & Newton board, framed. Late-Victorian c.1880 oil on Winsor & Newton board by Colin Graeme — intimate setter portrait (Gordon & Irish Red & White), framed, exhibition provenance. Primary Short Summary (1–2 lines for top of listing): Refined late-Victorian cabinet-scale sporting portrait by Colin Graeme (British, fl.1858–1910). Half-length paired portrait of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter in a Scottish Highland setting; oil on original Winsor & Newton prepared board, signed, later gilt gesso frame. Detailed Description This elegant late-Victorian sporting portrait (c.1880) by Colin Graeme presents a study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter, shown half-length and in profile against a Scottish Highland moorland. Executed in oil on an original Winsor & Newton prepared board — a professional, period-appropriate panel — the painting displays Graeme’s characteristic economy of composition and refined handling: a warm mid-tone ground, translucent glazing to model form, directional brushwork for coat texture, and selective impasto to enliven the eyes and muzzle. The composition’s restricted view (heads and shoulders) intensifies expression and working temperament, while the atmospheric handling of moorland, distant hills and foreground heather situates the sitters in authentic upland shooting country. The verso retains a Winsor & Newton label consistent with late-19th-century manufacture. Signed lower corner: “Colin Graeme.” Provenance & Exhibition: • Acquired from notable British auction house Hartleys Auction (Yorkshire), Lot 427. • Formerly in a private Yorkshire vendor collection. • Curated and catalogued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. • Exhibited: Victorian Sporting Art: Dogs, Field, and Country Life, Famous Lord Hill Museum, January 2026. Dimensions (Framed): Height: 36 cm (14.17 in) Width: 31 cm (12.20 in) Depth: 5 cm (1.97 in) Materials & Technique: Oil on Winsor & Newton prepared board; later gilt gesso decorative frame. Signed lower corner. Why This Work Appeals to Collectors (quick selling points): • Rare paired-setter composition in an intimate cabinet scale. • Authentic period support (Winsor & Newton label) and artist’s signature. • Exhibition history and documented auction provenance. • Well suited to study, gun room, library or refined interiors; strong appeal for collectors of British sporting art.
