The sketch was painted in conte crayon, a hard crayon made of graphite and colored clay with hues of brown and warm red, which creates the sepia tone of this artwork. Features a custom gold leaf frame with hand carved motifs, linen mat, and glass front. Signed Metcalf on upper right center. Metcalf was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He later moved to Massachusetts where he studied at the School Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He also studied European master painters while living in Italy and France, which influenced his style. Metcalf is known for his unique figure-genre paintings which feature the use of soft and translucent colors created in graphite , crayon, and watercolor paints.
