There appears to be an entangled multitude of complexities between this couple, particularly represented in the imagery of the mans head. The ladies top arms and hands appear to represent her eating at the time of the dinner being recorded in the painting. Her lower set of hands and arms represent when she was younger when the couple first met? it appears to be a self portrait of the artist with long term partner or a couple having one of those possibly, not so romantic valentine dinners, heavenly weighted with memories of spending years together.
