An early 20th century oil on canvas, d. 1917, depicting the Gay Head Cliffs of Aquinnah, on Martha’s Vineyard Island. This large (32”x40”) American Impressionist work was created by Frederick Louis Thompson (1868-1933), a Chilmark native who was educated at the Swain School of Design (now UMass Dartmouth) and later worked in New York City as a designer for Tiffany & Co. Thompson was particularly known for his windswept landscape paintings of the Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands which sold in prominent galleries around New York City, most notably to author Mark Twain.
