Fries was an important California plein air painter who was referred to as the Dean of San Diego artists, from the time he settled in that city in 1897. His reputation was based on magnificent atmospheric desert, water and mountain landscapes. He studied and painted in New York City and Paris before ultimately moving to San Diego. He was a Founder of the Associated Artists of San Diego, President of the San Diego Art Guild, Laguna Beach AA, La Jolla AA and California Art Club. During his lifetime, he exhibited his paintings across Europe and the U.S. His art continues to be treasured by museums, institutions and collectors across the globe.
