A beautifully detailed lithograph of a Nantucket harbor scene by Ruth Haviland Sutton, with boats, pilings, and waterfront buildings reflected in the still water. Ruth Haviland Sutton (1898–1960) was a respected American printmaker who made Nantucket her artistic and permanent home. After first traveling to the island in the 1920s to study with noted Nantucket School painter Frank S. Chase, she settled there full-time in 1936. In the mid-1930s, Sutton studied lithography in New York under master printmaker George C. Miller, alongside her close friend Elizabeth Saltonstall, refining the skills that would define her most recognizable work. She applied this training to scenes of familiar Nantucket landmarks—Easy Street Basin, the wharves, Main Street, Stone Alley, and other island views—creating images that were widely collected and reproduced. Sutton also produced a popular series of printed postcards known as Pencil Print Notes, as well as a frequently reproduced map of Nantucket and prints of the island’s best-known attractions.
