An original vintage photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's monumental The North American Indian, Portfolio IX (1913), depicting a Snoqualmie man of the Coast Salish peoples of the Puget Sound region. A quietly powerful profile study — Curtis at his portrait best, with the sitter wrapped in a striped wool blanket against a luminous, atmospheric ground. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, the rarest and most prized of the three handmade papers Curtis used — produced in only a few dozen of the complete sets and reserved for the deluxe edition. The gossamer tissue is chine-collé mounted to its original Holland Van Gelder support sheet, giving the image its characteristic depth and superb registration.
