Large oil on canvas by renowned New England artist Emile Gruppe entitled “Sunset Gloucester “ on reverse, painted C.1960. Born in Rochester NY in 1896 and died in Gloucester, MA in 1978. Best know for impressionist dock scenes such as this but he also did landscapes and portraits. He was educated at The Hague in the Netherlands, where he became very influenced by the impressionist paintings by Claude Monet, and later at the National Academy of Design in New York City. He would in 1942 permanently establish his home and studio in Gloucester. There he established the Gruppe Summer School with other artists including John Carlson, Richard Miller , and George Bridgeman. This painting is in excellent original condition, in its original driftwood frame, and signed in the lower right. Measures 25” x 30” (unframed), and 33” x 38”( framed).
