Sekka (1866–1942) is considered to be one of Japan’s most significant artists, designers and art instructors of the first half of the 20th century. He led the revival of Rinpa, a style created in the seventeenth century—and was a progenitor of modern design in Japan, creating imaginative, innovative imagery. He cooperated with other artisans to apply his designs to ceramics, lacquerware, and textiles. Each volume contains 20 images appropriated from the established Rinpa repertoire, and inspired by Chinese/Japanese legend and folklore: irises, the Thunder god, plum blossoms, deer in autumnal settings, the moon behind waves, the maid of Ōhara and the Chrysanthemum boy, to name but a few.
