Framed Japanese Woodblock Print " Buncho" (1927) By Artist Toshi Yoshida

Chairish

$1,000

Early original Japanese woodblock print by Toshi Yoshida (1911–1995), titled “Buncho (Java Sparrows),” designed when the artist was just sixteen in 1927. The print shows a pair of Java sparrows nestled together inside an intricate wooden cage, rendered with exceptionally fine line work and soft bokashi shading. This tender, intimate composition is one of Yoshida’s earliest and most sought‑after bird subjects and foreshadows the celebrated animal prints he produced later in his career. This impression is pencil‑titled “Buncho” in the lower left and pencil‑signed “Toshi Yoshida” in the lower right margin, consistent with self‑published lifetime editions. Japanese title/date characters are printed along the right side of the image. The reverse bears an old Brentano’s Galleries, Fifth Avenue (New York) label identifying it as an “orig. color woodblock,” adding nice vintage provenance. Paper shows age‑appropriate overall toning and some spotting on the back, but the image retains attractive color and detail. Perfect for collectors of Japanese shin‑hanga and sōsaku‑hanga prints, bird imagery, or early works by members of the Yoshida family.
