Frank Tolles Chamberlin (1873–1961) – Portrait Of A Gentleman – Oil On Canvas

Chairish

$396

Original oil on canvas portrait by listed American artist Frank Tolles Chamberlin (1873–1961). Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Chamberlin studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. He exhibited at major institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and is recognized for his academically grounded portraiture and mural commissions. This early 20th-century portrait depicts an older gentleman in three-quarter view, dressed in a dark coat and tie against a subdued, atmospheric ground. The restrained palette and tonal modeling reflect Chamberlin’s academic training and alignment with American realist traditions. The composition emphasizes structure and character over ornament, with particular attention given to the sitter’s facial planes and contemplative expression. Background is brown/dark olive, his coat is black. Oil on canvas. Unframed. A solid example of Chamberlin’s portrait practice and a compelling work for collectors of American academic realism and early 20th-century American art.
