French Antique Hand-Colored Etching Titled "Moyen Infaillible De Diriger Les Ballons", [Foolproof way to direct balloons].This is a Satirical Print, Originally Produced Around 1785 Set in Worm Wood Frame. The etching depicts jester-like figures attempting to control a small balloon using donkeys and a pulley system on the ground. It is part of a series of popular caricatures that emerged following the excitement of the first balloon flights in the late 18th century. The text below the image consists of two verses set to popular tunes of the time ("Air de Rerret" and "Air de Pierrot") and below that- "Se vend A Paris rue des Quatre-vents." [This print is sold in Paris in the street of the four winds.] The faded color tone, foxing on the edges lower right, upper left, and in the center plus the antique worm wood frame denote an original or early 19th Century restrike. In the National Air and Space Museum collection. Dimensions: Frame 13.25” W x 0.75” D x 15.75” H Art 10.5” x 13” In very good antique condition considering age and history. Zoom in on photos to see any imperfections including foxing on the border bottom right, top left, and two spots under the title. Also, the frame’s paper backing should be replaced.
