Splendid oil on panel depicting the "Toilet of Venus," likely of French origin. The painting showcases all the typical characteristics of early Romantic period painting, where the classicist and mythological themes and iconography of the Neoclassical period were elaborated with a more conceptual style typical of the Romantic and Orientalist styles of the early decades of the century. The painting certainly warrants further in-depth study, but it is noted how the skilled painter was aware of and drew inspiration from the painting and stylistic innovations of painters such as Domenique Ingres, in the definition of the blurred contours and in the scenic setup. A peculiarity of this panel, and probably a distinctive sign of the painter, unfortunately no longer clearly discernible, is the presence of a gold-highlighted sphere applied to the lower left of the painting, which would certainly appear to be contemporary with the painting. The dimensions of the panel are 48cm x 36cm, the dimensions including the non-coeval carved and gilded frame are 64cm x 52cm. A historical certificate of guarantee is attached to the sale.
