Gorgeous shipwreck scene dated 1874, depicting a sailboat in distress in a stormy sea, with men rushing to the aid of the crew, some of whom have fallen overboard. An obvious romantic theme, popularized by painters such as Eugène ISABEY and Théodore GUDIN, the style and technique obviously made us think of Jules NOËL when we acquired this painting 8 years ago (since kept in our personal collection). A few years ago, we found a similar composition, naively painted and inscribed "d'après Jules NOËL" (after Jules NOËL), suggesting that the original had been painted by the latter.
