He studied under Gustave Moreau and later developed a distinctive style marked by heavy black outlines, simplified forms, and a somber palette. Rouault worked extensively in printmaking, particularly etching and aquatint, and his work was exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. His paintings and prints are held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Centre Pompidou.
