A female nude in fading light, the Tuscan coast behind her deepening from gold to rose as the sun descends. Talani painted the human figure in evening light as one of his most sustained subjects, returning to it throughout his career to explore the way late light changes the relationship between the body and its setting: making edges softer, shadows longer, the boundary between figure and ground less certain. Sunset in Talani's painting is less a time of day than a state of exposure: the moment when the day's accumulated light concentrates itself into something direct and unavoidable. This work demonstrates his finest qualities: the precision of his academic figure training combined with the color knowledge of a painter who spent his life watching the Tuscan coast change color between five and seven in the afternoon. Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity.
